Essential Resources:

  • ADA.gov and beta.ADA.gov: ADA.gov provides “information and technical assistance on the Americans with Disabilities Act”, beta.ADA.gov is “an early, in-progress version of an improved ADA.gov”, still undergoing development.
  • Massachusetts Office on Disability: State agency that advances legal rights, supportive services, accommodations and accessibility for citizens with disabilities.
  • Massachusetts Office of Attorney General — Protecting the Rights of People with Disabilities: information offered by the Office of Attorney General Maura Healey, which “enforces Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Massachusetts Public Accommodation Law, and the Massachusetts Equal Rights Act, and focuses on eliminating discriminatory barriers to services and ensuring accommodations for all people”.
  • Perkins School for the Blind — Perkins Library: Operating out of Watertown, Massachusetts, “Perkins Library circulates more than half a million accessible books, newspapers and publications in braille, large print[,] and digital audio formats annually to thousands of registered patrons with print disabilities in New England and beyond.”
  • Social Security Administration — Disability Benefits: Information from the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) regarding the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs, including details of the application process, options to apply online, and lists information and documents needed to apply.
  • U.S. Department of Labor — Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP): A user-friendly Web site contains links to information of interest to people with disabilities, their families, employers, service providers and other community members on subjects such as civil rights, education, employment, housing, health, technology, and transportation.

 

Technology and accessibility:

  • Alt-Text As Poetry: a project of artists Bojana Coklyat and Shannon Finnegan, supported by Eyebeam and the Disability Visibility Project, Alt-Text As Poetry provides a useful introduction to incorporating alt-text and/as image descriptions to improve accessibility on the world wide web.
  • Apple Accessibility: A guide to accessibility features available on Apple Inc.’s macOS and iOS operating systems.
  • Microsoft Accessibility: Products to customize Microsoft products for various types of disabilities; includes features built into Microsoft products and software that can be purchased.
  • Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI): An initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the WAI “develops standards and support materials to help you understand and implement accessibility” on the world wide web.
